The Marvelous History of Grumblethorpe House
Built in 1744 and occupied by the Wister family for over two centuries, Grumblethorpe is a quintessential example of Pennsylvania German architecture. The Wister family’s historical interest and impact on horticulture can still be found in the properties numerous gardens.
What’s more, this house provides drama for your guests. Grumblethorpe was temporarily occupied by British Brigadier-General James Agnew, just days before the Battle of Germantown in the American Revolution.
But Agnew ran headlong into American troops while riding to battle, and received a fatal shot in his back. He bled to death at Grumblethorpe. The stain of blood on the parlor floor can still be seen, providing your guests with an unforgettable story.

Guests can then take their seats to share in the celebration of your wedding ceremony. You can take your vows before a gorgeous blooming garden or amidst towering majestic trees, with the beautiful house and greenery surrounding your guests and adding to the drama to your ceremony.

Whether you want your special event to be rustic, elegant or something in between, Grumblethorpe offers both scale and a myriad of intimate settings within the grounds.
Ceremonies, cocktails, dinner and dancing can all be curated to your needs and themes and the season of year. And many of our guests choose to add on a tent.
Dramatically decorated and lit, tents provide a beautiful back drop for guests to toast and dine and share in your joyful occasion. And of course shelter, protection and warmth should the weather not comply.
…A stark white storybook tent is great too for dancing the night away. And the tent together with beautiful lighting and decor create the romantic ambiance of a gorgeous outdoor ballroom, adding the final memorable chapter to your special celebration.
