An Exceptional Society Hill House

The Historic Hill-Physick House

Built in 1786, this four-story brick house is the only free-standing Federal mansion remaining in Society Hill. This stunning mansion was once the home of Dr. Philip Physick, graduate of the University of Pennsylvania and the ‘father of American surgery.’

With its commanding entrance and doorway fan transom, its impressive windows, grand proportions and classical lines, the Hill-Physick House is an exceptional example of the Federal style and a lovely setting for any event.

Beautiful French Neoclassic Rooms

Hill-Physick House is decorated with outstanding examples of French-influenced Neoclassic furnishings, popular during Dr. Physick's time in the house. The rooms provide entrancing backdrops for your photos and create a warmth and intimacy for the segments of your event held inside the house.

Your guests can also venture out into the enchanting garden through the houses’ ‘Thomas Jefferson’ floor-to-ceiling sash window which serves as both window and door.

Sophistication, Elegance, Intimacy

The first floor drawing room may be used for seated luncheons or dinners of up to 40 guests. Traditionally a bar is set up in the parlor with the seated meal served in the drawing room.

Cocktail receptions of up to 75 guests can utilize both the parlor and the drawing room on the first floor, giving guests room to move and circulate and take in more historic details of the house.

Guests are welcome to explore the other museum spaces during their visit. House managers are on site through-out to answer guests' questions about the history of the home and its inhabitants.

The meandering paths and draping greenery can make you forget you are in the heart of Philadelphia’s historic Society Hill neighborhood.

A Tent Adds Drama and Provides Protection

Tents can be a lovely addition to events held in the gardens. And they provide still more decorating opportunities to establish your mood and theme.

For all seated parties over forty 40 people and standing cocktail parties over 75 people, we do require that a rain-hold is placed on a tent.

The tenting reservation fee is not included in our base rental costs. Estimates can be obtained by contacting our tenting rental company partner on our vendor page.

Evening Receptions Create Romance

The Hill-Physick gardens provide a beautiful backdrop to your event and together with lighting, music and other elements help you create romance and beauty, especially at night.

The size of the gardens which surround the house also provide opportunities to create separate and unique gathering areas to add drama and enjoyment for your guests. The grounds are large enough to accommodate up to 100 guests for a seated dinner.

Lighting together with classical music and a pristine white tent can create a storybook feel for your dinner and bring intimacy to your gathering as you celebrate your memorable night under the stars.
